YAH PRIVACY POLICY

The Young American Heroes web site is designed and intended to be an educational resource for young people, especially young people 11-14 years of age, as well as their teachers and learning mentors who we refer to as Educators. Our goal is to increase understanding of American History and Civics, and to empower young people to realize that they can play important roles in their world today just as the Young American Heroes on this site have in the past. The Young American Heroes web site is committed to protecting the online privacy of our users. The Young American Heroes web site never attempts to market or sell anything to young people.

What Information Do We Collect?
From Educators, we collect sufficient personally identifiable information to ensure that those who apply to serve as Educators on the web site are who they say they are, and that they do currently serve as teachers or learning mentors for students in our target age group. This personally identifiable information includes name, email address, institutional affiliation, and contact information for the institution so that we may verify teaching or other mentoring status.

Once registered with the Young American Heroes web site, Educators assign names and passwords to the virtual classrooms they construct on the Young American Heroes web site, and provide that information to their students. Students are then able to register as part of their Educator's classroom area. To do so, we collect no personally identifiable information from the student: we collect a first name and first two initials of the last name so that Educators can identify their students. We also collect a screen name and password, both of the student's or Educator's choosing.

We also collect log data on our servers to improve performance of the web site. This is aggregate data and not associated in any personally identifiable way with any user. We also place a cookie on the hard drive of the computer that an Educator or student uses in order to enable our servers to remember what pages a user has already visited, what project a user is working on, and so forth. No personal information is stored in these cookies.

What Do We Do With the Information We Collect?
The personally identifiable information we collect from Educators is used to confirm the Educator's position as a teacher or mentor of students in a recognized educational or institutional organization. This information is used solely to maintain safe and secure operation of the Young American Heroes web site. Collected personally identifiable information is never shared with others outside of the Young American Heroes project.

The information collected from students does not include personally identifiable information. The purpose of collecting a screen name and password from students is to provide access for the student to only his or her authorized virtual classroom, and to ensure the safe and secure operation of the Young American Heroes web site.

Changes to Our Privacy Policy
In the event of any future changes to this privacy policy, changes will be posted on the Young American Heroes web site for the information of users at least two weeks before any such changes take effect.

We want Educators and students alike to have productive, fun, effective learning experiences on the Young American Heroes web site. If you have questions regarding our privacy policy, please contact: info@youngamericanheroes.com.
